(KIEL) An Bord der NASA-Raumsonde Mars Science Laboratory Mission hat die Kieler Sensoreneinheit im Strahlenmessinstrument RAD (Radiation Assessment Detector) ein erstes Teilchenereignis aufgezeichnet. „Die im Sonnensturm beschleunigten Teilchen sind so energiereich, dass sie die schützende Hülle der Raumsonde durchdringen und mit unserem RAD nachgewiesen werden können. Dass sind erste Hinweise auf die Strahlendosis, denen Astronauten während zukünftiger, bemannter Missionen ausgesetzt sein könnten“, so Professor Wimmer-Schweingruber vom Institut für Experimentelle und Angewandte Physik der Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel (CAU).
Die Raumsonde mit dem Marsrover „Curiosity“ ist seit ihrem Start am 26. November 2011 auf dem Weg zum Mars und soll dort Anfang August 2012 landen. Danach bestimmt RAD die Strahlenbelastung auf der Marsoberfläche, damit sie ihren Beitrag zu weltbewegenden Fragen leisten kann: War auf dem Mars je Leben möglich? Gibt es dort sogar Leben? Oder würde der rote Planet Leben unterstützen, beispielsweise in einer Kolonie?
Der Mars ist der einzige Planet außer der Erde, auf dem der Mensch diesen Fragen überhaupt nachgehen kann. Bei mittlerweile über 700 entdeckten Planeten, davon einigen erdähnlichen, wird die Frage nach der Entstehung von Leben und ob es auch anderswo Leben gibt, immer interessanter. „Unmöglich ist das jedenfalls nicht“, sagt Wimmer-Schweingruber. „Wenn wir jemals außerirdisches Leben entdecken, wäre das unglaublich und könnte uns Menschen vielleicht etwas zur Besinnung bringen.“
