(ROSTOCK) Studenten und Fahrräder – das gehört zusammen. Wenn man sich in der Kröpeliner-Tor-Vorstadt, Rostocks bevorzugtem Studentenviertel umblickt, sieht man schnell: Fahrräder sind hier das beliebteste Verkehrsmittel. Nicht zu reden von den Gebäuden der Universität, die täglich von tausenden jungen Leuten per Drahtesel angefahren werden. Das ist umweltfreundlich und stärkt gewiss auch die Physis der Studierenden. Allerdings stellt sich angesichts von Rostock Straßenverhältnissen die Loriot’sche Frage: Wo fahren sie denn?
Tatsächlich sieht es an nicht wenigen Stellen im Rostocker Stadtverkehr in Sachen Radwege mau aus. Hier und da eine auf den Asphalt gemalte Spur, die sich aber insbesondere an Kreuzungen allzu oft im Niemandsland verliert. Ausgebaute Radwege – Fehlanzeige. Das verwundert angesichts von rund 15.000 Studierenden, die per Rad in der Stadt unterwegs sind.
“Das ist kein Zustand”, sagt der Rektor der Universität Rostock, Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Schareck. Er, der selbst auch gern mit dem Fahrrad unterwegs ist, will Veränderung und fordert jetzt den Rad-Pfad, der die vier Campus-Standorte der Universität in der Ulmenstraße, Südstadt, Schillingallee und Innenstadt verbindet. Besonders die Fahrten mit dem Drahtesel über die Hundertmännerstraße und -brücke sowie in der Ulmenstraße hält der Rektor für gefährlich. “Wir brauchen neue Lösungen”.
Der Rektor findet offene Ohren beim Vorsitzenden des Allgemeinen Deutschen Fahrradclubs Rostock (ADFC), Martin Elshoff. “Die Fahrradverbindungen zwischen den einzelnen Uni-Standorten sind zum Teil katastrophal”, sagt er. Für besonders heikel hält Elshoff, ebenso wie der Rektor, die Situation auf der Hundertmännerbrücke und in der Ulmenstraße. Für letztere regt er kurzfristig Tempo 30 km/h an. “Auch am Saarplatz herrscht für Radfahrer Verkehrschaos”, sagt der ADFC-Experte.
Der Allgemeine Studierendenausschuss (AStA) der Universität hat im letzten Jahr eine Radwegeumfrage gestartet und arbeitet aktiv mit der Stadt und der Universität in einer Arbeitsgruppe zusammen. “Nicht selten kommt es zu brenzligen Situationen für radfahrende Studenten”, sagt AStA-Vorsitzende Sarah Grote. Hauptprobleme auch hier: Ulmenstraße und Saarplatz. Unterstützung erhält die Uni Rostock auch vom Rostocker Fahrradforum. Vorsitzender Dr. Steffen Wandschneider sagt: “Die universitäre Entwicklung an den großen Campusstandorten bietet hervorragende Anknüpfungspunkte für nachhaltige Verkehrspolitik. Die Konzentration ermöglicht die Ausprägung eines Veloroutennetzes mit leistungsfähigen Hauptadern, die insbesondere den studentischen Verkehr bündeln.” Wandschneider stellt fest: “Konzeptionell sind zahlreiche Vorarbeiten erfolgt, die auch im Rostocker Fahrradforum besprochen wurden.” Als greifbares Ergebnis verweist er auf die vor einigen Jahren speziell auf studentische Bedürfnisse abgestimmte Uni-Wegweisung. “Wenn klar ist, wo es lang gehen soll, kann außerdem gezielt in Qualität investiert und können auch Gefahrenstellen beseitigt werden”, sagt er. Ein Beispiel ist für Wandschneider die Aufhebung der Parkplätze in der Schwaanschen Straße in Richtung der August-Bebel-Straße zugunsten eines Radstreifens. Früher kam es hier oft zu Konflikten mit parkenden Fahrzeugen. “Momentan arbeiten wir verstärkt an schwierigen Knotenpunkten. Ich denke dabei an das ,Grüne Tor’, an dem man aus dem Patriotischen Weg künftig direkt in die Innenstadt gelangen soll. Die derzeitige Lage verführt viele zum Geisterfahren in die Lange Straße”, bemerkt Wandschneider.
Laut der Statistik von 2010 hat es in Rostock 284 Unfälle mit Radfahrern gegeben, sagt Polizeisprecherin Dörte Lembke. “Tendenz steigend.” Der Rostocker Polizei-Chef Michael Ebert sieht ebenfalls Handlungsbedarf: “Ich wünsche mir, dass Rostocks Straßen für Radfahrer deutlich sicherer werden. Städte wie beispielsweise Münster machen es uns vor.”
Der für Radverkehr zuständige Tiefbauamtsleiter in der Rostocker Stadtverwaltung, Heiko Tiburtius, kennt die Probleme gut. “Das Thema ist platziert und wird angemessen behandelt. Das Radwegenetz, insbesondere die Verbindungen zwischen den Uni-Standorten, wird leistungsfähiger und sicherer”, kündigt Tiburtius an. “Die Ulmenstraße wird bis einschließlich Maßmannstraße neu gestaltet. Der Radverkehr wird dabei eine entscheidende Rolle spielen”, so Tiburtius. Bereits im März wird die Bürgerschaft über einen entsprechenden Planungsbeschluss beraten. Das ist dann die Initialzündung für einen Diskussionsprozess, bevor 2014 die Bauarbeiten beginnen werden. “Die Hundertmännerbrücke ist so bemessen und gebaut, dass perspektivisch in beiden Richtungen Radwege geführt werden können”, sagt Tiburtius. Das Problem ist die Hundertmännerstraße. “Die ist schmaler als der Brückenquerschnitt. Das ist der Grund, dass Radfahrer hier nicht auf markierten Radwegen geführt werden können.” Die Perspektive: Wenn die alten Linden, deren Wurzel die Gehwege aufgewölbt haben, marode sind und gefällt werden müssen, gibt es die Chance, den Verkehrsraum auch hier zu erneuern und Fahrradstreifen zu schaffen. Als Problem sieht Tiburtius die Kreuzung Saarplatz. “Hier muss unter anderem eine Abbiegemöglichkeit in den Lindenpark, dessen Fahrradweg verbreitert werden soll, geschaffen werden.”
Im Tiefbauamt liegt indes eine Planung zur Umgestaltung der Kreuzung Parkstraße/Dethardingstraße vor. “Ziel ist es, dass in alle vier Richtungen Radfahrer sicher unterwegs sein können”, sagt Tiburtius. Das Projekt kostet voraussichtlich eine halbe Million Euro und soll ab 2013 umgesetzt werden. Laut Tiefbauamt wird auch die Verkehrsführung am neuen Campus Südstadt in der Albert-Einstein-Straße in den nächsten zwei bis drei Jahren neu geordnet. “Es geht dabei vorrangig um Radverkehr”, so Tiburtius. Innerhalb des neuen Campus wird ein Fußgängerboulevard errichtet, der alle neuen Uni-Gebäude miteinander verbindet.
