HAMBURG Studierende der Astronomie und Astrophysik an der Hamburger Sternwarte der Universität Hamburg können jetzt auch von Hamburg-Bergedorf aus den Sternenhimmel über Mallorca beobachten. Die Universität betreibt auf der Insel seit Kurzem ein Lehr- und Ausbildungsteleskop, das nach erfolgreicher Testphase heute, 28. Oktober, feierlich eingeweiht wird.
Der Vizepräsident für Studium und Lehre, Prof. Dr. Holger Fischer, vertritt bei der Übergabe die Universität Hamburg und wird von hochrangigen Vertretern aus Politik, Wirtschaft und Verwaltung der Insel empfangen. In Costitx befindet sich die Sternwarte Observatori Astrònomic de Mallorca (OAM). Die Universität nutzt das Teleskop in Kooperation mit der Open University in Milton Keynes/Großbritannien und dem Max-Planck-Institut für extraterrestrische Physik (MPE) bei München. Der Standort auf Mallorca bietet besonders gute Betriebsbedingungen. Aufgrund des Wetters ist die Zahl der für Beobachtungen geeigneten Nächte wesentlich größer als in Hamburg. Das Ausbildungsteleskop hat einen Durchmesser von sechzig Zentimetern und ist mit einer sehr empfindlichen Weitwinkelkamera ausgestattet, die Objekte mit der Fläche des Vollmondes in verschiedenen Farben aufnehmen kann.
Gesteuert wird das Teleskop mit Computern von Hamburg aus, in einem eigens eingerichteten Beobachterraum auf dem Gelände der Sternwarte in Bergedorf. Dort können Studierende der Physik die Bilder vom Nachthimmel über den balearischen Inseln via Internet empfangen. Das Teleskop wurde aus Studiengebühren finanziert und ist eine Investition in die Ausbildung an der Hamburger Sternwarte. Vizepräsident Prof. Dr. Holger Fischer: „Das neue Teleskop ist gerade für Abschlussarbeiten eine große Bereicherung, da es den Studierenden die Möglichkeit bietet, eigenverantwortlich Projekte durchzuführen und einen Beitrag zur aktuellen astronomischen Forschung zu leisten. Das ist etwas ganz Besonderes und sicherlich ein Anreiz, Astronomie und Astrophysik bei uns in Hamburg zu studieren.“
Studierende werden vor allem Planeten außerhalb unseres Sonnensystems beobachten, die an ihrem eigenen Zentralstern vorüberziehen (Planetentransit). Sie erforschen zudem Quellen von Röntgenstrahlen wie Systeme aus zwei sich umkreisenden Sternen. Jürgen Schmitt, Professor für Astronomie und Projektleiter an der Hamburger Sternwarte: „Natürlich bieten sich bestimmte Forschungsaufgaben für noch wenig erfahrene Studierende eher an als andere.
