ROSTOCK „Rostock ist der beste Platz, um sich mit Demografie zu beschäftigen“, sagt Angelo Lorenti von der Universität La Sapienza in Rom. Er ist einer von 17 Nachwuchswissenschaftlern, für die am Wochenende in der Stadt an der Warnow das in diesem Jahr an der Universität Rostock gestartete dreijährige multinationale Doktorandenprogramm „Demo-Doc“ zu Ende geht. Es richtet sich an Promovenden, die zu verschiedensten Fragen der Bevölkerungsentwicklung forschen. Programmpartner der Uni Rostock sind die Universität La Sapienza Rom, die Autonome Universität Barcelona und die Universität Lund in Schweden sowie das Max-Planck-Institut für demografische Forschung, Rostock.
Angelo Lorenti beschäftigt sich in seiner Doktorarbeit mit den wirtschaftlichen Auswirkungen des Alterungsprozesses in Italien. Der Direktor des Max-Planck-Instituts, James W. Vaupel, legte den jungen Wissenschaftlern ans Herz, den Alterungsprozess der Menschen nicht nur in der Jetzt-Zeit zu beleuchten, sondern ihn geschichtlich einzuordnen und einen Bogen zur zukünftigen Entwicklung zu schlagen. „Solche Denkanstöße sind gut“, sagt Angelo Lorenti. „Der Austausch mit renommierten Wissenschaftlern und Doktoranden aus anderen Ländern schärft den Blick für das eigene Thema.“
Die Rektorin von Demo-Doc, Prof. Dr. Gabriele Doblhammer, ihres Zeichens Inhaberin des Lehrstuhls für Empirische Sozialforschung und Demografie an der Uni Rostock und Direktorin des Rostocker Zentrums zur Erforschung des demografischen Wandels, sagt: „Das Programm hat das Ziel, Doktoranden bereits sehr früh das Mitwirken in einem internationalen Forschernetzwerk zu ermöglichen“. Die Teilnehmer können Kurse an allen fünf Partnereinrichtungen besuchen und an einer der Partneruniversitäten forschen.
Diese Möglichkeiten schätzt der Doktorand der Uni Rostock, Matthias Leuchter. Er untersucht, inwieweit die steigende Lebenserwartung durch Zu- und Abwanderung beeinflusst wird. „Der Austausch mit anderen Doktoranden hat mir dabei einen neuen Blick auf das Thema eröffnet“, sagt Matthias Leuchter. „Wir können mehr lernen, als wenn wir nur die Situation in einem Land betrachten“, schätzt Prof. Doblhammer die Möglichkeiten des Programms.
Demo-Doc wird vom Deutschen Akademischen Austauschdienst (DAAD) innerhalb seines Programms „International promovieren in Deutschland (IPID) gefördert, um die Internationalisierung der deutschen Hochschulen zu unterstützen. Diese Chance nutzt Joana Serret aus Barcelona. Sie untersucht das Heiratsverhalten der Spanier mit Blick darauf, wer aus ihrer Heimat Migranten heiratet und aus welchen Ländern diese kommen.
Während der Doktorandenschule in Rostock stellen die jungen Wissenschaftler renommierten Forschern ihre eigene Arbeit vor und können dann darüber diskutieren. Andres Palacio stammt aus Kolumbien. Seit drei Jahren studiert der junge Mann, der sehr gut Deutsch spricht, an der Universität Lund in Schweden. Er will ergründen, warum Reiche in seiner Heimat eine höhere Lebenserwartung haben, Arme dagegen eher sterben. Er hat während der Doktorandenschule andere Denkweisen gehört und ist auch nachdenklicher geworden. „So kann man ein Problem besser verstehen“.
Als Sprecherin des Demo-Doc-Programms liegt Dr. Nadja Milewski von der Universität Rostock besonders am Herzen, dass die Nachwuchswissenschaftler von weltweit führenden Demografen Denkanstöße über die aktuellen Trends in der Bevölkerungsentwicklung erhalten haben. „Mit der Doktorarbeit allein ist es nicht getan“, sagt Dr. Milewski. „Wenn die jungen Wissenschaftler international sich über ihre Forschungsarbeiten austauschen können, ist das von großem Wert.“
Demo-Doc soll erproben, ob es möglich ist, ein Doktorandenprogramm der Demografie über Ländergrenzen hinweg zu etablieren. Und bei dem dann zwei oder mehrere Universitäten gemeinsam den Doktortitel verleihen. idw
