Ungeheuer der Tiefsee
In seinem Vortrag im Rahmen von »Science@Sail« wusste Volker Miske einiges an spannenden Dingen zu berichten. Er erzählte von seiner Forschungsarbeit in der Tiefsee – und von den ungewöhnlichen Maßnahmen der Lebewesen, sich an diese Umgebung anzupassen.

ROSTOCK / GREIFSWALD Das Leben in der Tiefsee stellt man sich groß, beängstigend und gruselig vor. Riesige Fische mit scharfen Zähnen und unheimlichen Augen – Kinofilme lehren es schließlich so. Dass die Unterwasserwelt sich allerdings anders gestaltet, als man vermuten mag, hat der Greifswalder Meeresbiologe Volker Miske bei »Science@Sail« erläutert. Bei seinem Vortrag »Geheimnisse der Tiefsee – Leben in der Schattenwelt« wusste er spannende und interessante Geschichten von seinen Forschungsreisen zu erzählen.
Eine davon führte ihn mit dem Forschungsschiff METEOR in 36 Tagen von Haifa, Israel nach Malaga, Spanien. Das Ziel dieser Reise was die Untersuchung der Tiefsee. »Seit einigen Jahren gibt es Veränderungen der Artenzusammensetzung und der Häufigkeit von Krebtieren im östlichen Mittelmeer unterhalb von 1000 Metern«, erzählte Miske. Diesem Sachverhalt wollte man auf den Grund gehen. Dass es auch im Mittelmeer eine Tiefsee gebe, sei vielen nicht bewusst. Doch findet man auch in diesem Gewässer, welches man eher flach einschätzt, Tiefen von über 5 Kilometer. Die tiefste gemessene Stelle beträgt 5092 Meter.
Von Tiefsee spricht man aus biologischer Sicht ab 200 – 400 Metern Tiefe. Anders sehen das allerdings die Physiker: Diese sprechen erst ab 1000 Metern von Tiefsee, da ab dort der lichtlose Bereich beginnt. Ganze 80 % der Weltmeere gehören zur Tiefsee und die durchschnittliche Wassertiefe liegt bei etwa 3800 Metern. Der Bereich wird in zwei Gebiete unterteilt. Tiefsee – Freiwasser (Pelagial) und Tiefsee – Boden (Benthal). Miskes Fokus liegt auf dem Pelagial, schließlich sei dies ein deutlich größeres und artenreicheres Gebiet als der Boden.

An Board der METEOR gibt es einiges an neuester Technik, um das Leben der Tiefsee erforschen zu können. Diverse Vorrichtungen ermöglichen es beispielsweise, Proben bestimmten Tiefen und Monaten zuordnen zu können. So öffnen sich per Knopfdruck »Müllsäcke«, die in bestimmter Tiefe angebracht sind. Diese füllen sich mit Wasser, und man weiß anschließend genau, woher die Probe stammt. Daraus lassen sich viele Schlüsse ziehen. Anhand der Masse an Plankton lässt sich die Überdüngung der Meere und die Klimaerwärmung erkennen. Andere Boxen wechseln jeden Monat durch. So weiß man, wann sich welches Lebewesen an dieser Stelle aufgehalten hat, wenn man den Kot dieses Tieres findet.
Interessante Ergebnisse liefern aber auch die gefangenen Fische. Es ist faszinierend zu erkennen, wie sie sich an die speziellen Lebensumstände angepasst haben. »In ihrer Umgebung ist es dauerdunkel (ab 1000 Metern abwärts), es lastet ein hoher Druck auf ihnen und zugleich herrschen geringe Temperaturen. Durch die geringe Wasserbewegung ist weniger Sauerstoff vorhanden und auch das Nahrungsangebot ist geringer, je tiefer man kommt«, erzählt Miskel. Dort zu überleben erfordert also einiges an Einfallsreichtum und Anpassungsfähigkeit.
Die Überlebensstrategien sind zum Teil sehr ausgefallen, andererseits ähneln sie sich oftmals. Ein gutes Beispiel bietet der Laternenfisch. Meist ist er nur wenige Zentimeter groß, hat dafür aber einen überdurchschnittlich großen Mund und Augen. Außerdem ist er unauffällig gefärbt, erscheint fast schon skelettiert und besitzt viele Leuchtorgane. Diese sind systematisch hauptsächlich am Bauch des Fisches angeordnet und er kann sie selbst zum Leuchten bringen.

Der Sinn der großen Augen und des überdurchschnittlich großen Mauls sprechen für sich. Die Leuchtorgane haben allerdings eine spezielle Rolle. In der Dämmerzone, in der noch Licht einfällt (200 bis 1000 Meter) sehen Beutetiere ihre Beute, indem sie in Richtung Wasseroberfläche blicken, denn dort heben sich die Tiere gegenüber dem Dämmerlicht als Silhouette hervor. Sobald diese jedoch ihren Bauch zum Leuchten bringen, passen sie ihren Körper perfekt an das Zwielicht an und sie verschwinden im Schatten. »Die glimmenden Punkte dienen also der Tarnung«, schließt Miske.
Nach dem gleichen Prinzip handhaben es auch das Borstenmaul, der Gallertkalmar und der Silberbeilfisch. Beim Gallertkalmar befinden sich die Leuchtorgane nur auf den undurchsichtigen Körperteilen, die durchsichtigen werden gegen das Dämmerlicht nicht gesehen und müssen daher nicht getarnt werden. Doch das ist nicht alles: Der Vipernfisch hat die im Verhältnis zur Köpergröße größten Zähne um alles an Futter zu bekommen was möglich ist. Die Augen des Flohkrebses sind zu einem einzigen Sehorgan zusammengewachsen und bieten ihm so ein Rundumauge. Rot gefärbte Tiere werden unter Wasser grau und sind so gut getarnt, und dass manche Fische wie skelletiert sind kommt daher, dass sie unnötiges Gewicht loswerden wollen.
Kreative und notwendige Anpassungen an den unbequemen Lebensraum gibt es also viele. Doch trotz alledem gestaltet sich das Leben in den Tiefen des Meeres nicht einfach, und definitiv nicht abwechslungsreich. So verbringt der Laternenfisch den ganzen Tag im Dunkel der Tiefsee. Miske erzählt: »Sobald die Sonne untergeht, schwimmt er nach oben ins Dämmerlicht. Dort schlägt er sich den Magen voll, um mit Anbruch des nächsten Tages wieder in sein düsteres Versteck zu verschwinden.«
Aber eines haben all diese Lebewesen gemeinsam. »Je tiefer, desto gefährlicher und größer sind die Tiere – dieses Bild ist nicht richtig«, so Miske. So gebe es in dieser Tiefe hauptsächlich minikleine Tiere. In Sachen Anpassung sind diese allerdings die größten.
