Im Rahmen des Greifswald Canadian Studies Programme lädt der Lehrstuhl für Amerikanistik/Kanadistik der Universität Greifswald zur traditionellen Kanada-Konferenz in die Aula und den Konferenzsaal der Universität ein.

GREIFSWALD Eine interdisziplinäre Gruppe hochkarätiger Wissenschaftler wird sich mit der Rolle Kanadas innerhalb Amerikas und der globalisierten Welt auseinandersetzen. Unter anderem wollen sie der Frage nachgehen, inwieweit Modelle des multikulturellen Miteinanders, die von Eingeborenen Nationen Nordamerikas entwickelt wurden, zur Sicherung von Demokratie und Menschenrechten auch außerhalb Kanadas fruchtbar gemacht werden können, und wie andererseits unsere Erfahrungen und Vorstellungen in Europa neue und gegebenenfalls kritischere Sichtweisen auf Nordamerika ermöglichen.
„Kanada ist zu einer Nation der Amerikaner geworden“, so James Ferguson von der Universität Manitoba; aber wie haben die nordamerikanischen Nationalstaaten ihre politischen Systeme entwickelt? Wie hat das ‘Große Gesetz des Friedens’ des indigenen Bunds der Sechs Nationen westliche Demokratien beeinflusst? Unbestritten ist die widerrechtliche Enteignung von Land der indigenen Nationen; die Aneignung von indigenen Konzepten von Demokratie, Humanität, Frieden und Nachhaltigkeit wird jedoch weitgehend ignoriert. Mit einer Fokussierung auf Kanada wird die internationale Konferenz eben diese Entwicklung der demokratischen Verfassungen der nordamerikanischen Nationen untersuchen.
Dabei wird auch der Frage nachgegangen, inwieweit die kanadische Multikulturalität, einzigartig verankert in der Konstitution, in unserer globalisierten Welt als multilaterales Model für wirtschaftliche Beziehungen, Friedensmissionen, Menschenrechtsproblematiken und nachhaltiger Entwicklung dienen kann. Hat die Globalisierung die Tendenz regionale kulturelle Identitäten auszulöschen? Oder generieren eben diese Modelle neue dezentralisierte Netzwerke, die Grenzen von Nationalstaaten überwinden? Auf der Konferenz wird ebenfalls der Kontextualisierung dieser Fragen in öffentlichen Diskussionen, Literatur und Film nachgegangen.
Im Mittelpunkt der Konferenz-Beiträge stehen Themen, die sich mit indigener kommunaler Mitbestimmungspolitik und transnationalen Bündnissen auseinandersetzen. Dabei wird auch auf die Beziehungen zwischen den USA, Kanada und Europa eingegangen, speziell die aktuelle Entwicklung nach dem 11. September 2001. Des Weiteren wird die Rolle von multikultureller Literatur und anderen Medien wie Musik und Film in einer zunehmend globalisierten Welt diskutiert. Dadurch werden international bekannte Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler aus den Fachgebieten Ethnologie, Bildung, Geschichte, Politikwissenschaften, Verteidigungsstudien, Literaturwissenschaft, Linguistik und Filmwissenschaft aus Kanada, Großbritannien, Polen, Dänemark, Finnland und Deutschland zusammenkommen.
Zu den Sponsoren zählen neben der Kanadischen Regierung und deren Botschaftsvertretung in Berlin auch die Gesellschaft für Kanada Studien, der Fachschaftsrat der Studierenden der Anglistik/Amerikanistik, die Universität Greifswald sowie die Nordamerikafreunde Greifswald e.V.
